Note the type of batteries used and the expected number of shots from a fresh set of batteries. If the battery type is AA or AAA compare the price of alkaline vs. lithiums or rechargeables and check which variety represents the best value for money spent.
Always carry spare batteries and a charger when using rechargeable batteries.
If your camera comes with a memory card it is more than likely too small. Swap it for at least a 1GB card that can be had for less than U$100.00
Always carry at least 2 memory cards. That way if one gets filled or malfunctions (a very rare occurrence) all will not be lost.
A belt attachable pouch is convenient for men to carry their camera and not lose it by leaving it laying some place. Ladies usually have a convenient sized handbag.
Consider the ergonomics of various cameras.
Determine a budget. Today an excellent digital camera can be had on the south side of U$500.00 Accessories, though, can run you more.
Go to a store and test drive different cameras. Get a store assistant to go through the various functions/ menus and stick with intuitively designed models.
After doing all of the above make your purchase and prepare yourself for a new level of fun.
